CEMFLOOR is described as a high-performance cement-based, free-flowing, self-compacting liquid screed

CEMFLOOR is described as a high-performance cement-based, free-flowing, self-compacting liquid screed which is available throughout the UK and Ireland. It can reportedly be installed quickly (up to 2,000sq m per day) saving time, foot trafficked in 24-48 hours and dries within 28 days with minimal shrinkage (<0.05%). It’s suitable for various applications, commercial and domestic floors, underfloor heated floors, wet-rooms, bonded, unbonded or floating floors, new-builds or renovations and single or multi-storey projects.

Cemfloor is reportedly only installed by fully approved and trained applicators ensuring quality is never compromised. Says the company: ‘Its reduced drying times ensure floorcoverings can be applied quickly without delaying the project. At a final moisture content of 2.5%CM Cemfloor screeds will have achieved a relative humidity value of <75%; compared to gypsum-based screeds which need to be dried to a final moisture content of 0.5%CM to achieve a relative humidity value of <75%.’

The company continues: ‘The reduced drying times of Cemfloor ensure strict project timelines can be adhered to without long delays waiting for screeds to dry out. Cemfloor boasts exceptional thermal conductivity and is very suitable and responsive to underfloor heating due to the fact it can be laid in very thin sections compared to traditional sand and cement screed. This ensures lower energy bills and running costs.’

Cemfloor is a blend of various additives and materials. The constituents are reportedly very carefully blended in exact proportions, each is chosen and designed to allow for a certain property of the final screed. Cemfloor has reportedly been designed and refined over many years to control the properties of the screed, and, in particular, the shrinkage movement at every stage of the screed’s lifecycle.

  • During the first 24-48 hours of rapid hardening and drying
  • During the three-to-four weeks drying when moisture loss will be quite fast
  • During the working life of the screed, Cemfloor reportedly has the flexibility to withstand normal movement owing to, for example, underfloor heating.

Continues the company: ‘If the benefits of the Cemfloor System are to be described in one word it’s ‘robustness’. Every aspect of Cemfloor is controlled in fine degree and can deal with the harsh conditions that can be encountered at a building site.’

Case study: Capital Dock
Capital Dock, a 22-storey mixed-use development, including office blocks and residential areas, is in the vibrant Dublin Docklands and was developed by Kennedy Wilson. John Sisk & Son was the main contractor and Clarke Contracts installed 25,000sq m of Cemfloor.

Says the company: ‘The main advantage here over other flowing screeds is the quicker drying time. It also eliminates any risk of incompatibility with cement-based adhesives and levellers and no special preparations are needed beforehand. After looking at the options, Cemfloor was chosen owing to its faster installation time and drying time compared with traditional sand and cement screeds. This helped to keep the project on track with its tight building schedule.’

The company continues: ‘The screed was pumped and placed 20 storeys high without issue. The limited space available on-site was also a factor to be considered and was resolved by use of the screed. It was delivered to the site ready-mixed, which eliminated the need for on-site mixing and storage of sand and cement.’

Case study: Battersea Power Station
Battersea Power Station is at the heart of one of central London’s largest new developments. The £9bn project will see the creation of a vibrant new destination for London, housing a community of homes, shops, cafes, offices, leisure, and cultural venues, with more than 19 acres of public space.

Cemfloor was used as part of a composite system to provide a lightweight floor build-up. Energystore TLA was installed at various thicknesses to level out the existing uneven substrate with 30mm depth of Cemfloor CT C30 F6 screed then bonded directly onto the energystore TLA. This system reportedly had the following benefits of the original specification, according to the company:

  • Significant weight reduction: the original specification had a weight of 300Kg/sq m whereas the energystore TLA and Cemfloor proposal had a weight of 120Kg/sq m.
  • Greatly reduced installation time: the original specification was a semi-dry system which would have been manually placed and compacted. Both energystore TLA and Cemfloor are flowable systems which are pumped into place and tamped to provide a smooth level surface.
  • Faster turnaround time allowing follow on trades to progress with works without any delays.

Cemfloor says it has more than 80 distributors in Ireland and the UK with 100-plus approved applicators.
