Flooring in education - colleges and universities

Veitchi with Burmatex and Polyflor

Veitchi with Burmatex and Polyflor at Discovery Innovation Centre, Herriott Watt University, Edinburgh. Built on the site made vacant by old student accommodation within the Herriot Watt University Campus, the Discovery and Innovation Centre will become the Universities Flagship building known as the GRID. The new development incorporates new learning and teaching space for Mathematics, engineering, physical sciences and computer science facilities. Some specialist design works certainly tested the skills of our flooring operatives as they brought to life the vision of architect, Dominic McAndrew in this ground-breaking facility. Products installed to the 1800sqm included Burmatex Tivoli, Alaska, Rainfall and To Go as well as Polyflor Expona LVT. Dominic McAndrew, project architect, Shepherd Robson said: ‘Ensuring the space did not feel institutional was key to the design here, stringently laid by hand, Veitchi worked in a diagonal 2-by-1 herringbone pattern, using 12 variants of Burmatex carpet tiles with a randomising equation. The project was a success because Veitchi wasn’t fazed by our insane setting out.’
